Measure Your ROI:  Was Your Campaign a Success?

Authors can purchase a report providing statistical feedback measuring the success of their promotion using Library Locator. The report, taken from internal resources, will include the number of libraries shelving a particular title before the promotion and the number after the promotion. It will also provide the total number of copies purchased by your targeted libraries.

When you purchase a report, you will be sent a request form asking for the list of titles you would like included in the report. You will receive your report four months from date of request (to allow for the lag time between promotion to libraries and the title reaching library shelves). This report is protected by the Terms of Use and may not be shared.

To accurately measure the success of your promotion, it’s critical that you purchase your report at the same time as your subscription. A count of your books already in libraries must be taken to compare the results.

Author FAQs

How do the title reports work?

Authors will complete a request form on which they will list the titles of books promoted using Library Locator. Four months from the date of the request, they will receive a report indicating the total number of libraries owning the titles before the promotion, and the number owning the titles after the promotion. The average number of copies of the titles purchased will be included in the report.

 

Is the Library Locator just a compilation of available data? Isn’t all the information available to the public through various websites?

While public online sources contain some library information, none is as comprehensive as Library Locator. Library Locator includes contact information compiled from many (many!) hours of research. Also, information on public library sites is not regularly updated. Library Locator is updated monthly.

 

As an author, can I get a group of writer friends together to share the cost and share the information?

No. Each author subscription is for individual use only. All Library Insider’s products and resources are protected by the Terms of Use. To share the data with others is illegal and prosecutable. By signing the Subscriber Agreement, an author is committing not to share the data and to use it only for the duration of his or her subscription.

 

Why is the Behind the Stacks training necessary? Isn’t approaching libraries just a matter of common sense?

Libraries are inundated with marketing materials, and their book budgets are limited. Behind the Stacks training equips you with the tools to make your marketing efforts stand out in the crowd, as well as provides an insider’s view of the library culture. Additional information, including library ordering seasons (when libraries purchase most materials), selection criteria, and trends in library purchasing provide you with the basis for a successful marketing campaign.

 

It seems like a lot of money. Is the price fair?

Compiling the data for Library Locator was labor-intensive, requiring approximately two years to complete. Also, no other list provider updates that data monthly—many do not update the list at all. Most lists allow only one-time usage. In addition, most direct mail services do not offer the amount of information included in Library Locator, including email addresses for the individuals who buy the library’s books.

 

Don’t libraries keep people from buying our books? When a book is lent by a library, doesn’t it potentially steal a sale from the author?

Libraries reach an entire segment of the public that never enters bookstores. Library use skyrockets during tough economic times. Borrowing a book from the library is a great way to become acquainted with an unfamiliar author and may lead to the purchase of additional copies or other books by the author. People who borrow books from the library are great word-of-mouth promoters, telling others about your books.

 

If I can print labels, what’s to keep me from printing enough for a lifetime of library promotions?

Library Insider’s resources and products are protected by the Terms of Use and Subscriber Agreement, which all subscribers agree to at the time of their subscription.  Plus, the data within Library Insider is constantly changing.  Library staff frequently change positions. You do not want your materials addressed to an acquisitions librarian’s predecessor! One of the significant values of Library Locator is that it is updated monthly.

 

I’m not a Microsoft Word or Excel expert, can you generate custom labels for me from my library data?

Absolutely! If you don’t have the time or the technical savvy to wrangle your downloaded data into labels, we’ve got you covered. Our Upgrades menu offers a Custom Mailing Label option for your account. Receive a printable label document, with a mail merge of your selected states already completed. Then simply insert the necessary labels into your printer, hit “Print”, and you’re done.

 

What if I need help with the content for my promotional materials for libraries?

Although we don’t design the flyer for you, Library Insider can provide assistance in creating the content for a flyer or other promotional materials with the essential elements librarians need to make purchasing decisions. This assistance is geared to your particular book(s). Our Upgrades menu offers a Flyer Content Assistance & Critique option for your account.
